Re: Can slabbed casino chips be GOOD for the hobby

I'm *very* new to this hobby. I do not have any chips in my collection except my own custom chips. I might have a $1 chip left over from a cruise, or two...who knows.

But anyway, I understand this is a very serious hobby so I do not mean to step on any toes.

However, with my very limited knowledge this is my opinion on "slabbing" and "Limited Edition" chips.

First off...if I'm correct, I have gathered "slabbing" to be the act of taking a chip and sealing it in a protective case to make sure that it stay in tact. (If I'm wrong, please correct me.)

I really don't see a problem with this. I put this on a level of placing baseball cards within an airtight protective case to ensure that the chip isn't ruined. Especially with someone who puts their chips on display over and over again. The amount of people at shows might be close to the amount of people handling these chips in a casino. (Not everyone washes their hands...if you know what I mean.)

However, this is just my opinion. Again, I haven't been in the hobby for that long...so it's very possible that my opinion might change over the years.

As for limited editions, if a casino will charge more for a certain value of chip then the written amount on the chip: then whomever buys these is, in my opinion a bozo. The casino takes enough money through crooked games, and high vigorish percentages. They don't need to be charging more for limited chips.

Well...these are the opinions of a *very* beginning chip collector. I would *really* like to hear the thoughts of some of the more avid collectors in the group. (I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed, and I hope I'm not beating a dead horse...)

Thanks for reading.
