Can slabbed casino chips be GOOD for the hobby?

Here I am sticking my neck out again and it will probably be chopped off.

First of all, I am on Andy's list and have pledged not to own, sell or have anything to do with slabbed chips. I have not changed my mind and will still not own, sell or have anything to do with slabbed casino chips.

Although my thoughts are probably NOT going to be popular, here they are. There may be an aspect to slabbing casino chips that will be beneficial to the hobby. That aspect is exposure of casino chips to new collectors and the expansion of the hobby. How will this happen? There are many slabbing companies out there that essentially provide the same service. In order for them to be successful, these companies have to advertise and promote themselves all the time. If these companies started to also slab casino chips, they would say so in their advertisements that appear all over the coin hobby magazines and in other publications. The major slabbing companies have tables at the larger coin shows and would now not only show slabbed coins but also slabbed casino chips. This would be an awful lot of exposure for the casino chip collecting hobby. I imagine coin collectors strolling past a slabbing companies table or reading one of their advertisements and thinking to themselves: "Gee I have a few casino chips that I saved over the years from my gambling trips. Do other people really collect these too? Let me find out some more information about them." At this point I know I have not convinced you. You are still thinking that "I find slabbing casino chips so distasteful, that I don't care how many new collectors they bring into the hobby, I just don't want them around". Please read on.

I do not collect limited edition casino chips. I do have a couple in my collection, by I mostly stay away from them. I know that I am not alone; that there are others in the hobby that also feel the same I do about limited edition casino chips. Although I do not collect them, I have no problem with other people collecting them. In fact, many new casino chip collectors got started in the hobby because they noticed the pretty looking chips that they were playing with on the gambling tables. If limited edition chips bring in new collectors to the hobby that is just fine with me, even though I do not personally collect them. It is the exact same analogy with slabbed chips. If slabbed chips serve to bring new collectors into the hobby, that is OK with me, even though I will not have any in my collection.

All right, if I have not convinced you that there could be a beneficial aspect to slabbing casino chips, then get out your axes and start chopping.
