The first edition of Campiglia/Wells used the MSxx designation, Peter. After a lot of negative chipper comments and after giving it some further thought, they used CSxx (chip state) as a designation in the second edition of the book. They do recommend that you use the more commonly used letters (like VF) when describing the chip after you have established it's relative position on the numeric scale.
