I don't think the flip did it...

The chip doesn't make contact with the cardboard. If you look at the flip, the mylar layer should encompass the entire surface of the cardboard, so the chip never makes contact with the cardboard. That's why I don't think it could have been eaten away by being stored. Most likely it came to you that way, unless the chip is used by the Impossible Mission Force to deliver coded messages. vbg
