Mine is an HP ScanJet 3c, the predecessor to your 2100 I believe. Does your scanner do a little initialization routine when it first powers on? With mine, I hear the scan head move a bit and reset. I must turn my scanner on, then wait for it to do it's little thing before turning on the rest of the computer equipment. I use one of those power strips to do it.
