Re: 10¢ per hour IS the issue

"I'm not trying to start a fight with you Archie. We established long ago that we have differing opinions on this subject."

Oh really? I was willing to allow this thread to run its course Bob .... until I read your confrontational personal post. All I did was post an unedited Atlantic City newspaper account of what the issue is all about in Atlantic City Bob..... not what an anti-labor voice out in Colorado THINKS the issue is all about.

"...but I can't let outdated labor rhetoric influence young people entering the workforce without offering a differing opinion."

What's outdated about this issue Bob? It's the old classical big business standard of scare tactics in an attempt to keep the labor force in line so that they can never enjoy a similar standard living that organized employees in other large corporations in this area enjoy.... while management keeps getting fatter bonuses and more frills on the profits made at the expense of the production workers who are producing the revenue.

As for your concern for "young people entering the workforce" .... wow, isn't that admirable?

My advice to these new workers entering the workforce is that in my opinion, "while some unions are better than others, any union is better than none at all and the sooner you find that out for yourself, the better". Don't let some of those anti-labor voices tell you otherwise.

BTW Bob: My original newspaper post was in response to a question posed by Rick Swartz and others who asked:

Question: "Isn't it illegal for Park Place to do that? I didn't think they could fire employees for going on strike."

The company says they have not been fired, but they have been replaced.... sometimes by offering more money than the .10¢ they are offering the strikers. The issue is more complicated than that. It has to do with demographics and area prevailing wages.

Why don't some of you folks who think that a .10¢ an hour raise is a lot of money move out to the Atlantic City area and take these wonderful island jobs? Hell; McDonald's pays that much money.

I don't know what the cost of living is in Colorado.... but there is no question it's a lot higher here on the east coast. The casinos have trouble filling many of these lower entry jobs, because many of the applicants, especially those from the inner-city are automatically disqualified because of criminal records.... so the available labor pool is significantly shrunken. There are many social issues surrounding this problem. It's not just about the measly dime offered, but the dime represents the lack of respect Caesars has for its own decent hard working employees. It's about unions bringing respectability and pride to their members by bargaining a fair wage on their members behalf, among other things that would take too long to explain on this bb. And that's MY opinion on this issue. So now that we've both aired our views Bob, I would hope that could be the end of it.... but I know it won't be. grin
