Re: Obsolete - IF it were only that simple!

What about the Bonanza $1? If you had taken one to the cage at the Bonanza 2 years ago, one that was obviously removed from circulation 20 years ago, would they have redeemed it? I don't know, and I don't think it would make any difference. The best knowledge we had available in the hobby indicated the chip was obsolete.

What about this chip? By every current Nevada gaming regulation, it qualifies as a legal casino chip. What if Cal Neva has 10,000 of them in the vault, and they decide tomorrow to open up a quarter craps game with these chips? Even in Roger's example of a casino long closed and boarded up... if the owner of the chips opens a new casino by the same name, and chooses to operate with the old chips...

This is probably yet another example of something where this club will never agree on terminology. I say if a casino removes a regular house chip from play, with the apparent intention of not using them any more, the chip is obsolete. LEs and NCVs are a little more complicated, since they generally were never in "regular play" in the first place. If a casino will not sell them, even if some are redeemed and they have them in the vault, they are obsolete. We must live with the fact casinos control the chips, we don't. A chip can change status from obsolete to current at the whim of casino management unless a destruction order has been executed, or gaming refuses to approve it for current use.
