You're somewhat correct, Brian, but a chip does not have to be replaced in order for it to become obsolete.

Also, what may be considered by some gambling jurisdictions as "obsolete" chips may easilly be "resurected" at a later date to be used in that same casino.

I'm sure others will have additional information.
