Re: collecting roullettes
In Response To: collecting roullettes ()

Since "novice roulette collector, Sheldon, has asked for some advice, or tips regarding collecting roulette chips, I'll offer the following:

1. Skip the hot stamp chips unless they are almost new with lots of gold hot stamp in evidence.
2. Skip the generic chips that do not have the name of the casino on them.
3. Be aware that you are considering entering a very controversial aspect of the hobby. There are some "purist" chip collectors who shun roulettes like the plaque and who consider those who "aquire" roulettes as "chip thieves". Don't let the name calling discourage you Sheldon. We roulette collectors are preserving chip history just as much as the early pioneers in the hobby did 20 years ago. Roulette chips are a challenge and much tougher to obtain..... and are much scarcer than the hundreds of Limited Edition chips that are issued each year. A typical roulette bank is only 300-400 chips of a specific color/design. When a collector "walks" with a stack of 20 A.C. chips, for example, that's just about all that exists among roulette collectors after the chips are eventually replaced with another issue (except for CHIPCO's which are extremely popular). Contrast that with the 1000-3000 chips in a typical commemorative issue today. in I wish I had nailed more roulettes from the Brighton, Hilton, Golden Nugget, Boardwalk Regency, early Resorts and early Ceasars, when I had the opportunity to do so. Some of these "early" Atlantic City roulettes bring big money today.... and we're talking relatively recent history, I've seen Brighton roulettes being offered by some dealers for over $500 each! Go for it Sheldon! You may enjoy the challenge.
