There is still knowledgeable collectors spending on chips, much less for obvious reasons and not because of fakes, fakes were invented the same day as real was...... Are there more Fake, Tribute, etc chips? Yes I guess you have to narrowly define "Fake" in the hobby (Which is far from dead). What I consider a "fake" is an item deliberately made to fool others. Tributes and home game sets and chips are NOT THAT.
Where we agree is on "Slabbing", even if that ship has sailed I cant imagine what the "real" opposition was. One that comes to mind is that collectors didn't want anyone to know what the real perceived population of rare chips is. Currently we have to count on some BS like individual price guides, an obvious conflict of interest as these books are written by "dealers" and sellers who have a strong interest in what the price guide says. (not to mention, control what the book says)!
The price guide TCR has SO MANY items in it there is no way the item values can be updated in time for the next issue, not to mention chip values in that particular guide and others were maintained by individuals writing the books and the "buyers" really had no way to look at things like worthpoint, eBay past sales and other sites for "Live" up to date sales numbers. To me written price guides have been made obsolete.
Just pull out your phone and look it up on multiple sources.........
