According to some contemporary books and others from the later 1800s, cash is mostly mentioned although the much later "Goddess of chance" mentions red and white tokens and a much older book mentions counter holders once so..........
I find it a little unusual that nobody mentions the tokens/counters and seem to concentrate more on the building, the chef and the losses of various high profile gamblers. I have a few other books that may yield more information but nothing rings a bell from when I read them many years ago.
