Yesterday, I sent 3 chips....

to Russia. I've sent them to Europe and S. America before, but this was the first time for Russia. I sold the chips for less than I paid, and told the buyer that the shipping (bubble envelope) w/ postage would be $3.50. Anyway the clerk, Cecil, whom I've known for a while weighed the envelope, and affixed the custom declaration, and said, "$9.60". I hadn't expected the postage for 3 chips and a mailer to be that much. I told him that postage to Russia was high.

On the way to the car, I reviewed the receipt. It said that the package weighed 11.1 ounces. Now, I know that this is almost 3/4 lb. and there's no way that it would weigh so much. I went back to the P.O., but by this time there were 8 people in line. He saw me and asked if I'd forgotten something. I told him no, but was he certain that the package weighed 11 ounces. He replied, "that's what my scale said." I dropped it and went home, but still turning it over in my mind. I got 3 chips, put them in a bubble mailer, and a package of bread mix that weighed 12 ozs. Of course there was a noticiable difference.

Back to the P.O. with my chips and bread mix. He had my money waiting. He said that after I left he checked his scale, and found that it was wrong! You'd think that someone that does this for his business, and weighs things everyday would have felt the difference in weight. I worked for the P.O. myself about 30 years ago, and I know that I would have.

Anyway, I was just out gas and time, but it came out alright. Wonder how many other patrons paid more to mail packages that day...
