HOMEOWNERS COVERAGE
In Response To: Re: Chip Insurance ()

First, it depends on the language of your policy. My Allstate Homeowners does provide limited coverage under the "arts" category...but not full coverage which is why I have a separate collector's insurance policy. A brief story. Some years ago my Allstate insurance agent advised me Allstate would no longer provide coverage for my chips. The explanation? He said that a local NY coin collector had insured a large collection of coins and then made a claim following a "burglary." either before or after paying the claim (I forget which) the agent noticed an auction for a coin collection--turned out to be the insured who was auctioning his "stolen" collection. Apparently because of the danger of fraud, Allstate would not provide coverage. It changed its mind but the company told me I had to provide photos of each chip; I told my agent that since I had over 100,000 chips that he was free to come to my place and photo each chip. The company backed off and included the collection in the arts category. But that convinced me to get a separate policy. I respect Rich but disagree with his implied position not to insure your collection.
