Here is my point Jerry. There is a difference between hunting for food or survival and huntng for so called sport.
I would wonder what percentage of these so called kills are to utilize the meat for food and what percentage is for the so called thrill of the kill, take a picture, take the rack and tell a good story and leave the carcas to rot.
A guy goes on safari in Africa and kills 7,000 pound hippo or a tiger and does what with it?
What purpose did it serve? He isn't going to eat the animal nor in most cases even use it for a trophy?

Sure we can make the argument of overpopulation and that some of these animals would die anyway. You would get no argument from me. For that matter, we could start in NYC, there are plenty of 2 legged animals there and it certainly is overpopulated LOL

Call me crazy but I view sport as a competition. When you reduce it to an animal that has only its instincts to protect itself against someone with a gun, I have to question what kind of sport that is.
Can you imagine you and I played hockey but my advantage over you is that you don't get to have a stick LOL I could call that sport too
