Re: Newport Oregon Report Part IV

748 SW Bay Boulevard

When I returned from Oregon last year, I posted an extensive report, in which I described the gaming at Rogue Ales Public House in detail (check the archives for 4-06). I will make that discussion brief here. The restaurant/brew pub is located on the bay front in a central location. On one end of the house in which the restaurant is located is a gaming room. The room contained two poker tables, two blackjack tables and a number of video lotto-style games. The room is operated by an individual independent of the brew pub, who gives a percentage of his take to the house, and in return, gets the space and a few brews along the way. A young guy, he seemed quite nice. He owns the chips and brings them with him to the games. The games are run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and are scheduled to begin around 9:00 p.m. “Scheduled” is a very loose term. The operator shows up when he wants and opens the room when he thinks the time is right. I had to bug the waitresses several times to get him to open the game. Once he did, well after 10 p.m., it took about 5 minutes for the entire hold ‘em table to fill up. We played $2-4 no fold ‘em hold ‘em. It was a lot of fun, but a very hard game to beat. Bets and raises often had little to do with the cards in the players’ hands. Anyway, the operator, who was also the dealer, was always within feet of me, and the game had a home game feel to it, so it was a bit tough to leave with too many chips. In fact, the dealer ran out of $1 chips and had to give $5 chips only for re-buys. The following pictures were taken last year:
