Re: A followup...

You're right. Douglas Alley IS in Reno. When one reaches my age, the little gray cells turn to mush. What the heck is the alley in LV where many little hole in the wall joints thrived?

I can see the problems that you are finding, Pam. About 10-12 years ago, Michael Knapp, Ernie Wheelden and I attempted to write a succession list of all known addresses in Las Vegas. We wanted to list every numbered address with the gaming establishments that had been there, year by year.

We found that the numbered addresses had been changed a few times by the city planners. Therefore, even though we had the correct address, it was not always at the same location. Many of the older buildings had been demolished, which led to some of the old addresses becomming parking lots or garages for later properties. We found that telephone books did not always delete listings when a casino or club closed down. Some listings remained for several years after closing. We also found misprints and misspelling in phone books and newspaper articles.

Howdy Herz did a masterful job of compiling Harvey J. Fuller's "Index of Nevada Gambling Establishments." Since most of Harvey's notes were scribbled on the back of keno cards, Howdy had a tough time deciphering Harvey's notes. He couldn't always be sure just what Harvey had written. grin

Michael, Ernie & I, formulated a pretty good list of successions but due to the vast discrepancies, we decided not to publish. Maybe someday, we will find the time to return to the project, if we can ever figure out which alleys are in Reno and which are in Las Vegas. grin And, good luck on your project, Pam.
