I've got an Epson 1660 Photo, but I use Photoshop Elements and when I scan I use the "Import" and "Epson Twain" and this is the preview pane it brings up. (This one was made with the lid open my mistake)

From here I click the "Preview" button to show a dotted line of what is going to be scanned, adjust the line and then hit the "Scan" button. The picture below was made like that and then reduced to 27% in Photoshop Elements, then I applied the "Sharpen" filter and saved it as a JPEG.
