Why Should A Fake Chip Be More Valuable???
In Response To: The Goldfield and My chip ()

The carving of the print was NOT done when the chip was new. The dyed red rim shows much wear while the print shows little or no wear. I can not understand why this chip should be worth 350.00 or more when it is obvious that someone added carving to the original chip, years after it was made. It is my opinion that the addition of the print lessens the value. Even the crack is a natural occurance and would not subtract from the value as much as adding false print.

In my opinion, the original chip without the crack is valued at 50.00-100.00. With the crack about 30.00-60.00. With the addition of the print, it is a damaged chip with a crack, with very little value, 10.00-20.00.

I do not understand why Rich thinks that adding false print to the chip, makes its worth 5 times as much or more. Does he think that the addition means that it is from The Northern Club in Goldfield, Nevada? Does he think that the addition lends a touch of history to the chip, even though it is a fake? Even if the print were added a few years after the chip was made, it is still a fake and ruins the value of the original chip.

The seller has been notified of our opinions and has said that he will contact the buyer with this information.

It is the reported opinion of the following ivory chip collectors that the print was added some time after the chip was scrimshawed and is not from The Northern in Goldfield, Nev.:
