I agree with everyone else that you did the right thing. One other thing to consider is that the person may not have been in a financial position to offer a monetary reward. Hard to tell regardless of what the checkbook or other items might have indicated. I'm not trying to defending their action just pointing out a possible reason for not offering a reward.
