We had a similar situation here in New Jersey at the Bergen Iron Works. Tokens that could only be used for purchases in the company-owned store were given to workers who lived in company housing in leiu of wages. "I owe my soul to the company store" ... was the phrase in Ernie Ford's folk song; "16 tons".
