Some chips will not stand on edge when new.

Once again cross harching is something that varies from the time the chip is pressed.

In general, a chip that stands on edge has not be used to the point where the edges have rounded. Easy way to state that it's not "worn". Easier to say, stands on edge than, not worn and rounded. "how rounded and worn?" Well not much, less than this, more than that? What's the radius of the edge and all sorts of much more complicated evaluations.

Simple description that it either does or doesn't pass. Since grading is often subjective (don't let me go there) stands on edge is a PASS / FAIL test.

As usual nothing else about a chip should be assumed from the "stands on edge" statement.
