Yes, that's true... you can remove a gold hot-stamp cancel from an old chip with nail polish remover (acetone). However, as JohnZ mentions, you can melt the chip with this solvent so it has to be done very carefully. Best to try this only on chips that have a cancel over an paper or plastic inlay in the chip.
