Re: C&J vs. H&C mold
In Response To: C&J vs. H&C mold ()

C&J, my favorite mold! I've never seen a scan that captured the shine of the hats but here's a good example of the insert style Jill talked about. The actural chips were manufactured by the Burt Co. but sold by distributor Christy & Jones, and when Bill Christy and Bud Jones split up in '65 Christy joined Paul-Son and retained the mold. Burt used the mold to make Paul-Son hat & cane chips with different clay composition and sent the mold on to Paul-Son about 1970. There were some shiny Paul-Son hats Burt made for Paul-Son by hotstamping pre-split blank chips. This adds some challenge to the shiny/dull C&J/H&C determination. Paul-Son started making the hat& cane chips themselves and after the Burt molds wore out the difference in appearence became more pronounced. Different clay composition, new Paul-Son molds and difference in craftmanship produced the dull hats of the modern Paul-Son hat&cane we see today. If there is the slightest doubt of shinyness when you look at the hat, then you've got a Paul-Son. If you look at the hat and remark, "Boy, that's some shiny hat!" Then you've got a C&J or a very early Paul-Son made by Burt Co., the date of issue is the key here.

The story of Christy & Jones is one of the great tales of chipping and I'll endeavor to post a link to a version out of the archives.
