Gene, The original Avenue Night Club building had been built in the 1800's and was a Bowling Alley before it was the ANC. The old building (181 Fairfield Ave.) burned in 1963 killing one person, a female waitress. The Club was rebuilt immediately, on the side that was 179 Fairfield Ave. The old section was two stories and was totally destroyed by the fire. This area became the east parking lot for the new club. The first picture below is of the fire, the second is of the Avenue as it would have been in the late 60's to early 70's. The large windows you were referring to, were covered over by a metal mesh grating, and were painted yellow and black. About 3 or 4 years ago the building was purchased by an insurance company and underwent massive renovations. The third picture is of the building as it is today.
I don't think the Avenel Social Club had anything to do with the Avenue Night Club. I knew Duke Mile, the owner of the Avenue, since I was old enough to walk, and he used to tell me all about the place. My brother worked there from 1965 to 1974, so I spent quite a bit of time hanging around there. There was however, an Avenue Social Club. This was a men's only Club that met at the Avenue Night Club. At one point the women got together and formed the Women's branch of the Social Club, which met on a different night than the men. After the Avenue closed in 1977, the men's Club moved out to Melbourne Ky. where the Club is still in existence today. The women's Club met at the Loyal Café, also in Bellevue, for several years following the close of the Avenue, but due to dwindling membership, their Social Club ceased to exist sometime in the early 80's. I don't know that a lot of this has much to do with Roy's picture of Barney's, but that's just another case of me getting off of the topic.
