postal insurance for a $22.00 item costs $1.10. That is 5% of the value of the item.

I doubt you are experiencing anything like 5% loss of packages, so you are better off keeping the $1.10 and self insuring.

Lets say you buy 100 items each with a value of $22.00

Lets assume that 1 gets lost or damaged.

If you buy insurance on all of them you will have paid $110 for insurance.
On your insurance claim you will recover your $22.00 -- Net loss of $88

If you don't insure you are out $22.

Now when you get to high end items, you may decide that you would prefer to share the risk, but for low end items postalinsurance is a rip off. There might be less expensive third party insurance which makes more sense.
