Re: Anthrax Question??
In Response To: Anthrax Question?? ()

I responded to a post on USENET regarding the question of if anthrax could have been distributed during the crash into the towers. My original thought was as you mention that heat would kill the bacteria during the explosion of the jet fuel and the resulting fire. I, now, do not know if I was correct in my response as I have since heard it mentioned that one of the problems with the anthrax spores was that they are resistant to heat. I did hear that they do not survive too well with moisture or water or with UV light. I guess they are best stored and preserved in dry dark places. I personally would like some clerification on this from someone or some place. When they say, for instance, heat resistant, How hot are they talking about. Also, they say it is very hardy and will survive in daylight but I thought someone said that it deteriorated in UV? How much UV does it take and for how long to kill the stuff? I am really confused.

Your mention of putting mail in a microwave is interesting. It is probably not a very efficient way to protect people as, like mentioned, the environment that anthrax is delivered is in a dry form. However, What is the effect of irradiating it? Also, since the powder will probably have some moisture content, how hot can you get a letter in a microwave before it catches fire? Can you even micro a letter and get it that hot? Also, could microwaving just heat it to a temp where it would incubate and become more dangerous? Yikes.

I am, right now watching the replay of our local 10pm news and they are talking about the Reno incicdent and about anthrax in general. They reported about 4 or 5 different scares that were called into the Chicago area this evening. This is getting scary and it would be nice to know what can possibly be done. They tell you some things to look for and what to do if you see anything suspicious. They mentioned to wear gloves and a mask if possible and to double bag any suspicious items in a zipper, (ZipLock) bag and to call the authorities immediately. They said earlier, also, to leave the mail or item where you find it and DO NOT move it from one room to another. I would assume that you should also clear the office of anyone else when you leave to call authorities. If you have handled an item that you are suspicious of they say to thouroughly wash your hands with soap and water.
