Thanks for bidding. READ THIS INTERESTING STORY ABOUT THE 633
CLUB Flamingo (633) Club The Flamingo Club, also known as the 633 Club,
was located in Newport, Kentucky during their boomtime for illegal gambling.
Like many clubs of the time, they did not like advertising for their illicit
endeavors. For this precaution, they printed "633 Club" on many of their items
in an attempt to seperate themselves from their gambling ventures. Although
when it comes right down to it, the ruse was not so intelligent since 633 was
their address on York Street. One thing was different about the Flamingo than
the other clubs in the area - it was not run by the Cleveland mob and was
allowed to remain open unrestricted. This was due to the owners, the Levinson
brothers, being good friends with members of the Eastern syndicate. There
remained intact an informal contract between syndicates back then to let the
others do business without interference - to certain degrees. The Flamingo
represented a small investment in the overall revenue coming into Newport and
the Cleveland syndicate let them operate. But life was not harmonious at the
Flamingo. After a highly publicized murder in Newport, the club and the
owners were found guilty of playing a part. Instead of strict prison terms, the
club was revoked their liquor license. This didn't seem like to harsh a sentence
for the club operators though. They were already running an illegal gambling
house, what would serving a few illegal drinks hurt? So the bar remained
open despite the court rulings. One night, the owners were tipped off of an
upcoming raid and quickly replaced all the booze bottles with flower pots and
gathered around a table in an otherwise empty room. When the police and
reporters showed up for the raid, all they found were the owners and managers
sitting around a table drinking milk! You could imagine the embarassment of
the law. The casino operated unmolested for awhile, but the heat was rising.
Politicians were being voted in with the declaration of ridding the town of
gambling on the top of their list. The operators of the club knew it was time to
leave and packed up for the desert to run the Fremont Hotel in Las Vegas in
1956. The club saw a rebirth in the 60's, but the gambling was gone. In its
place, the Flamingo Club was transformed into a teenage dance club - earning
high legitamacy but low money
