Re: Puerto Rico Chips

Robert .... just a follow-up to your post. You are absolutely correct that "some" chips in my PR catalog are priced on the high side, with good reason. A valid comparison can be made with the $5 Thunderbird chip that made its appearance at the Club's convention this year. I'm sure all will agree that the high value of that particular chip took a big hit. That initself does not mean that all Thunderbird chips or all Las Vegas chips are overvalued. However, the PR chips we are talking about that are priced in the $35-$50 range that are currently selling in the $15 to $20 range is not as wide a spread as the Thunderbird example.

When I first published my book on Puerto Rico, the most comprehensive PR chip catalog issued to date, I based alot of the pricing estimate information on what I had paid for most of the chips that are in my personal collection. Before publishing the catalog, I then consulted with a few other local collectors here in New Jersey and New York who also possesed strong collections of Puerto Rico chips and discovered that they had paid similar prices .... in some cases even ghigher prices ..... usually from the same source.

Since the book has been published, it would appear that the floodgates have been opened back on the island and much of this material that obviously is available in larger quantites than has been touted, is now being shipped to the U.S. mainland for disposal. Several of the estimates that were compiled two or more years ago would not be as high if the book were to be published for the first time today.

Having said that, there are many chips (in my opinion) that are equally underpriced in my book. So, in short, I would hope that all Puerto Rico chips are not painted with the same brush. Also, for the record, several PR chips that are not listed in my book, nor do I have in my personal collection, have since made appearances. This in itself does not mean the chips are "rare". It just means that I have not seen one before, and keeping in mind that I have never visited Puerto Rico, that would not be unusual.

Lastly, the mere fact that someone purchased PR chips on Ebay at a very reasonable price, does not necessarily mean the chips were not worthy of higher bids. I know that several times I've been shut out on Ebay on particular Puerto Rico chips that I would have bid much higher on .... had I been at my computer and not in Atlantic City on the weekend when the auction ended. I think this is true with a lot of collectors in general who simply don't have the time to be at the very end of Ebay auction sales (sometimes very late at night or in the wee early morning hours on the east coast).

BTW; I don't think that I will be publishing a revised issue of my now sold out Puerto Rico Catalog in the very near future, for a few reasons.

1. Puerto Rico does not issue chips as frequently as does Nevada, Atlantic City, etc., so there is no need for annual revised catalog updates for relatively few chips to add.
2. Puerto Rico chips are not as popular with the general population of chip collectors.... so producing additional catalogs in large quantity with very limited demand is not economically feasible. (150-200 copies is a lot.)
3. Al Rollins, who undoubtedly has the finest collection of Puerto Rico chips, is in the process of issuing a more comprehensive catalog on Puerto Rico chips that I'm told will be ready by the end of the year. I hope that his price estimates truly reflect the current marketplace for some of the issues that seem to be available in larger quantities.
