I’ve been through the hotel several times starting in the
70s. Several owners all claimed to reopen it but just took
the furnishings. I used to stop at the Green Parrot bar when
it was open and the floor, walls and bar were covered in pennies.
The house by the fire station was owned by Tex Rickard who
promoted the 1906 Gans-Nelson fight (plus many others). I
once hauled a six foot mousetrap to the Santa Fe bar for Jim
Marsh. I remember a 21 game there but never saw it open. A
guy named Grogan used to own it and drove around in an old
hearse. The house with all the gables used to be the Gables
Bar another favorite stop.
