It's been over twenty years since I quit and I had only been smoking for about five years when I quit.
The biggest thing that helped me was I told myself that "I'm not going to smoke today and I am not going to worry about tomorrow until tomorrow." And when the urge to smoke would get really bad I would chew Nicorette gum which was a life saver. Eventually I switched over to regular gum and chewed that until my jaws were about to fall off.
