It explains why the drill hole is tan all of the way down, since the whole hole would be exposed to the light.

That's what I saw on the first images. The hole is faded all the way through and that extends to the surface. Light, UV, Sun or anything else, that faded this chip, on the tan side, would have also faded the inside of the drill hole and all the way through. (IMHO)
