Some very close matches in David's catalog.


Of the two, I think the font on the chips posted in the thread are closer to "New Hobo", which is slightly thinner than "Hobo".

According to this Wikipedia article, [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobo_(typeface) ] the "Hobo" font typeface has a long history, tracing back to the early 20th century. I was hoping that the font itself was somewhat more recent and might be a way to date some chips.

I am still going to try to figure out when it began to be used as a hot stamp font on chips, and gather more information about who used it.
