Having traced the Cortez Club to the address of 8428 Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Strip of Los Angeles County) through the 1932 L A City Directory . . . I searched further and found that Les Bruneman was the Manager of the Cortez in the early 1930's. The Cortez later became "Stratford on Sunset" which offered rock-n-roll music (The Byrds played there) but it was becoming a seedy place, known for its LSD and marijuana sales and drug busts by the Deputies. Eventually the place lost is liquor license. No booze, no business! The building was eventually torn down. In its prime, however, it was described as "the Castle on Sunset" because of the parapets on the roof. Presumably this same design existed when it was the Cortez Club - I guess it looked like a Spanish Castle where Conquistador Cortez might hang out!

Searching for more info on George Les Bruneman, I found this interesting article - chock full of familiar gangsters and some gambling dens. Also, confirming the address of the Cortez Club. For your amusement only, I attach a link to the article. Les Bruneman looks rather formidable - I'd think twice before asking him for a Drop Chip of any color!
