Based on the scenarios that you presented, the real drawback from someone interested in purchasing a rarer item would be is it real? I understand that there are items on the ChipGuide that have been attributed to the wrong place(s), but I would think that if someone could reference that same chip on the ChipGuide, it might bring a bit more comfort to them to open their wallet/purse. If your rare chip is listed in The Chip Rack or even if it is shown in The US Casino Chip guide, that would certainly be beneficial. How comfortable would you be spending a bit of money on a rare chip without having a visual reference of that chip somewhere? Once again, I know that the ChipGuide is not perfect, but it sure is something that I use when I come across something rare that fills a need for my collection. Personally, I see greater benefit in having that chip/item listed on the ChipGuide versus not having it listed.
