I used to refill my own color inkjet. If you like paying $30 for some water with coloring, it's great. If you like having rainbow fingers, it's novel. rofl I did for years, HP printers.

Then I bought a printer tank system, Epson R200 - used bulk ink. The tubes broke eventually and the heads plugged. But much better. I could print CDs and DVDs on special disks that had white surface.

Then I went to a Brother Laser Printer. They print roughly 2000 pages on a toner and about 10,000 on a drum. Start figuring what 2000 pages cost "Inkjet" vs $19 for laser.

The Laser FAX is useless, (I have efax). One was hit by lightning. One the drum went out after many years. I replaced it with a USB printer only for $59. They come with the introductory cartridge only 1000 pages.

Here's the hook. They are monochrome/black and white.

Latest Brother (my third or 4th) is wireless WiFi, prints both sides, makes barcodes for mailing that are readable = $99. Old one is on the work computer for orders and invoices. Still chugging along.

If color and photos aren't important and printing documents, codes, labels and anything else is what you want, Laser is the answer. Yes, it's waterproof but I hardly take pages into the pool or rain, intentionally. ;-)

I have a color laser printer. Toner refills for all the colors and black is $69. Laser is not very good for prints, photos or fine work. It is much less expensive for documents.

Bottom line. B&W printing, you may want to get a second printer, a Brother Monochrome Laser Printer, HL-L2320D = $59 at many places like Office Depot. Have a second printer for B&W work. I did that and last trip to recycling I took 3 or 4 inkjet printers and I have none now. Everything is B&W, and inexpensive. The color laser is off in the corner, a monster, maybe I'll turn it one some day.

Try a monochrome laser printer, Brother is the best for your money. I predict that anyone who does, will soon find their ink expense has dropped enough to pay for the second printer, and the headaches, plugged jets and reduced costs will be a relief.

ps I'm a photographer. If I want a print I go to the corner store, make it and come home. Why should I pay for a "Photo Printer", photo paper, supplies and upkeep, when I can make a wonderful quality print on the Kodak or Fuji system or other professional machine. Walgreens, Costco, (fill in a name here), you can upload a photo to print, and go pick it up later. I mean, 19 cents for a 4x6 and nice 8x10s are reasonable compared to the headaches of owning a home printer.

Brother laser printer with starter cartridge for $59 - 1000 pages, next 2000 pages $19. Under $80!!!

Anyone who cares to can figure out how much for an inkjet printer to print 3000 pages (in color of course) and come back at me.

There's the story of why I don't own a color inkjet any longer. The cool colored fingers and mess is gone, but I sure had a good time injecting, filling, re-setting and fussing with those. Good entertainment.
