Michael, Welcome to The Chip Board and Welcome...
In Response To: A little help for a newbie? ()

to the World of Casino Chip collecting!

Ruben has posted some very valid points, and I am certain that others will stop by and do the same.

From my point of view, Limited Edition (LE) chips kind of gave the hobby a re-vitalization some years ago. And while frowned upon by a few collectors, the very existence of LE chips has brought in new collectors to the hobby. And while many only collect LEs (for them, LE's are the way to go!) many have also expanded their horizons to rack (or house) issue chips as well.

One of the more interesting aspects of collecting LE's is that in almost all instances (and Yes, there are exceptions) you can acquire LE's at a small fraction over face value, years after they were issued (10 -15 years!) and get them in uncirculated condition!!! This is tough to do for house chips that are 10 - 15 years old, i.e., at a fraction over face and in uncirculated condition).

The decission to collects LEs, to me, is a simple matter of whether or not you like the chip. If Yes, then they can be had at a bargin. If No, then chances are the same chip(s) will be available years from now, in the same condition and slightly over face, so you can wait. Of course this says that LEs tend to not appreciate over time, but are you collecting for ROI (return on investment) or for the FUN of it?

Glad you posted here and feel free to ask all the Newbie questions you can. Welcome to the hobby and as Ruben suggests, take a look at the organized Club aspect of the hobby (the ccgtcc ) and consider membership!

Best regards,

Jim Follis
