Difference between promo chips and tourney chips

Remember, what we collectors call NCV chips includes several different types of chips. In addition to the different treatment of payoff you mention for promo chips, tournament chips cannot be played at all in a money game, only in a tournament situation.

From that perspective, NCV tournament chips have no value at all to the player when not being played in a tournement. However, they all have value to collectors. My general rule is that most NCV tournament chip is worth at least $10-15. The higher denomination chips have a higher collector value because there are fewer of them, and there's a bigger risk in a player pocketing them. Most players won't try to make off with a 1000, either because they still have a chance to place in the tourney, or because the pit people watch the big chips more closely.

Also, there are lots of older NCV's that are available in the collector market in VERY large quantities. These are usually worth less than $5.
