Congratulations ...
In Response To: Re: See Snopes.com ... ()

... on the anniversary Paul. That's an extraordinary and wonderful thing. Hope you and Peggy are both doing well.

Libertarians, of course, have what would be characterized as "liberal" beliefs on some subjects and "conservative" beliefs on others. On this one, Libertarians have a "liberal" point of view. And I know we are on essentially opposite sides of the illegal immigration issue, as we have discussed before.

But, please re-read you original post and note that not once in the letter does Rosemary LaBonte ever use the word "illegal" ... the diatribe was directed, generically, at "immigrants". I was responding to that broad-brush indictment of all immigrants (which is why I was careful to address most of my comments to legal immigrants rather than illegal (other than to note that illegals cannot serve in the military).

Two quibbles with your response: First, while it is a crime to enter the US illegally, it is only a misdemeanor, not a felony as suggested in your response (unless the person entering has previously been convicted of illegal entry, in which case a second conviction is a felony). And I agree wholeheartedly that we have enough of our own felons and support without reservation the imprisonment and/or deportation of any immigrant, legal or otherwise, who is a convicted felon.

Second: "Yes, I am aware of the children of illegals doing great deeds and fighting for America during time of war, but they are still criminals." Children of illegals born in this country are, under the constitution, citizens. And, since illegals cannot even join the military, all of those children of illegals who are "doing great deeds and fighting for America" must be citizens either by virtue of their birth here or by otherwise being in this country legally, so they are not "criminals".

And even if they were, wouldn't you agree that honorable service in our military, never mind getting killed in the service of the U.S., pretty much pays whatever debt they might owe?

Take care, my friend, and give my regards to Peggy.
