I blame the "cute" children

Kids are always spinning the cranks like it's a free ride. When machines disappear, it's usually because they have been broken. After all, the stores and attractions that have the machines don't usually pay for them - they just split the proceeds with the machine's owner.

Another disappearing souvenir from the past is the Mold-A-Rama. The Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village in Dearborn and Museum of Sscience & Industry in Chicago are the only two places I've been to that try to keep these toymakers alive (although I've heard there's another place somewhere in the country that also has multiple machines and keeps them in full operation).
