Ethics question

A friend of a friend has a chip they want to sell. I do not know this person. What I do know, is the chip could actually be quite valuable, as all known examples are cancelled, and this one is not.($2000 by "the book). He is thinking about putting it on EBAY, but He doesnt know what its worth,he knows I collect and has asked what I think its worth. I know I could totally low ball him and get the chip for a couple hundred......but I just cant do that. If I tell what the book says it may be worth, probably blow my chances of picking it up, as I really dont have alot of money. The only thing is, you cant live and die by "the book", it has its faults.....someone finds a box, the price goes out the window....etc. (Just look at the sunflower, La Rue, and binions chips).

What would be the appropriate thing to do?

This year was my first year collecting, and my first year attending the convention. While at the convention, I had a chip I wanted to sell(which I knew was valuable), so I was asking around. one of the first dealers I talked to offered $100, and said I'd be luck to get that much offered again. I sold it a little later to another dealer for $900. I know what I felt about the first guy afterwards.....and I definately dont want to be that guy. But at the same time, I hear alot of stories(usually about people that everyone in the hobby seem to know and respect) about how someone got a chip worth big bucks for next to nothing from someone who didn't know what they had. it almost seems to be common practice.....so what is everyones thought on the subject?

Any input welcome

Thanks,
Shawn
