That doesn't sound right, Mark. Storage at 40-50 should have no effect on clay chips unless there is something else in the garage that affects them. Like exhaust fumes, maybe? Like pesticides or fertilizer also stored there?

Even freezing them should not be a problem. Heat accelerates all chemical reactions. Cold slows them down. They might be somewhat more brittle when frozen, but that should only be a transient situation.
