Andi, it could indicate a cancellation, and...

a cancellation that has been removed. If a chip is hot-stamped to affect a cancellation, later on the hot-stamp foil can be removed, but the impression remains.

However, I think you should wait for a few more responses here before that explanation is fully accepted.

Can you do a detailed scan and post here?
