Re: Northern Michigan?
In Response To: Northern Michigan? ()

Ed, just wanted to respond to your message regarding the correct location of "Northern Michigan"-- for Terry, "yes" it is the UPPER PENINSULA. I live here in Marquette and too often hear these downstate (below the bridge) people refer to Traverse City or Petoskey and being Northern Michigan. We have a total of 11 casinos in the UP. Also the Orignal Indian Casino
was started here in the UP. An Indian by the name of Fred Dakota started one in his garage at L'Anse, Mi. He had three home/made wooden tables and use the drugstore type red/white/blue plastic chips. I played there and it was an experience to remember to say the least. This was before anything became legal in Michigan. The tribe closed him down after 5 or 6 months, stating he was not offically on the reservation. He then started "The Pines" but had to give this up to becasue the told him, "Casino's must be run by the Tribe" not an individual. So he ended up getting the Ojibwa I
started, however after a few years some problems came up with "kickback" money with slot machines and he ended up serving some prison time as a result. He is out now and continues to work with the Tribal Council.
So, It all began here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan-- the very first Indian Casino. And look what we have today.
Say Ed, if you get to Marquette on your trip to the UP, I'm listed in the book. 226-7082
Have a great trip.
