The 405 freeway...

...is the San Diego Freeway, located right here in Los Angeles. You're right, though, if you're driving in one of the narrow center lanes (the left lanes have concrete barricades running along the side with no shoulders), and you pick the right time of day (ie: between 3:06 and 3:09 AM), it's quite the pleasurable experience.

If course, this most-travelled road in the world is basically a parking lot most any time between 5:00 AM and 9:00 PM. I've even been in traffic jams at one in the morning.

The NJ Turnpike, on the other hand, has nice WIDE lanes, full-width shoulders, separate truck lanes, and is full speed ahead at rush hour, until you get in the NYC vicinity.

I don't know why I'm even thinking about this, to tell you the truth... the commute is one of the only negative things I've experienced since I moved here from New Jersey 10 years ago. Of course, they don't know what public transportation is around these parts.
