Justin,

Anthony gave you pretty good advice. You don't have to make it complicated when providing a background material that will enhance scanned images. Colored artist's papers in books of many colors can be found at both office and artist supply stores. A blue absorbent background will make white chips almost glow. Play with different background colors, and not only will you have some fun, you'll learn the strengths and weaknesses of your scanner. That knowledge will help you better show what the chip actually looks like.
