While many people are paranoid about a perceived threat in which they would need a gun and losing the right to own one would leave them vulnerable was not the issue. I purposely framed my question to avoid that to see how fast the NRA side would pop up, which is not a defense to gun death but everyone wants to squeeze in. I never said we should ban guns, just asked how to reduce the gun deaths. Banning was an assumption you made on your own; I even stated later I had guns. If my child dies from a gun-wielding killer I will feel just as bad as if she killed in an auto crash. I am not leaving my guns loaded and in easy reach, nor will I leave the keys in the ignition. I don't trust kids that far, yours or mine. In a majority of auto deaths alcohol is a factor, banning alcohol is not the answer to that issue either. Stiffer penalties? Death row is full now.

WHAT ABOUT...
Making guns only operational by the owner (believe it or not, there are works in that direction already), OR a storage system that can only opened by the owner. Better screening of gun buyers. Better record keeping of who owns it (like a car title or license plate) to (help) keep more guns from people that should not have them. Those are possibilities one could work on.... Unfortunately gun lobbyist, I fear, will surely try and thwart those and use 'gun control' as a basis to infer banning as a next step and fuel paranoia.

The real problem cannot be fixed as fast as alterations can be made to the devices. Some of you have answered Family Values, Morals, Environment, Movies/Games, and etc. I believe all of those are contributing factors. Ego and paranoia are two huge factors for the adult group. An alternative to carrying a gun is to avoid any situation you perceive you would need a gun in, and take your chances in the others. Same way for a car wreck, avoid unsafe situations and accept the risk in others. You already do accept the risks now if you drive. We have become an anti-social society, we don't talk to strangers, we don't know our neighbors, we don't want to get involved, and etc. All of this fuels paranoia causing a snowball effect of more paranoia. We talk on computers and telephones rather than in person. It is a very complex problem that didn't occur over night and will not end over night, but I have no confidence it will change. Sadly, that will bring on more victims.

RESPONSIBILITY...
What about having gun owners carry a liability policy that will insure that his gun will never do negligent or criminal harm to another? Make the last known owner share some liability in damages (good incentive to keep guns safe from others)? As far as criminals having guns I say, for the most part 99% of the guns are manufactured legally, somewhere many legal guns become illegal weapons the door needs to be closed. That’s all.
