Mike - I was there in 1991 and I found a

1,000,000 Cruzados note, devalued to 1,000 cruzeiros with the triangle stamp, and then again to 1 New Cruzeiro.

At the same time I went to Argentina where they were enjoying inflation at about 19,000% (compared to the mere 7,000% in Brazil). You only changed up $5 at a time! All the street traders flocked to the bank at 3pm to change their takings into $$ in case it was only worth half the next morning!

I dont know if you have ever been to Brazil, but in those days at least, the government set certain prices, like for alcohol and cigarettes. A bottle of beer may have been Band 'A' and cigarettes Band 'D'. Every evening on the news they would announce the new prices for each band. On two occasions the price went up while I was drinking it! You dont pay until you leave the bar.

Many shops merely priced things with the relevant 'code letter' and displayed a board in the window.
