I will relate my experience with McAfee. It came installed on my computer -- after a year a virus hit me, since the definitions were not up to date. I spent close to 14 days emailing and talking to those people on the phone and the only response I got was to go talk to the computer manufactor or pay $123 to get their upgrade which was selling in the stores for about $70. I have shorten this story because of the frustion I experience every time I think of them.
There were 23 phone calls to them or HP when I quit counting. I called Norton who helped me clear the virus at no chage and advised me to get their package which was on sale for $49 after rebate.

Naturally I bought Norton and have kept it current and have spent some time with their support. It has been a good deal.
