Re: Oberon is in the sign in back
In Response To: Re: Reno in 1910? ()

so I searched for it. (but got beat to the punch by Richard)

Neon came to Nevada just after the first interstate highways were built. The first to be completed was the Victory Highway -- later called U.S. 40 and nowadays Interstate 80. The first documented neon sign in Nevada is shown in a photograph by Frederick Jukes of the People's Market in Elko, which is dated 1928. Actually, electric signs, composed of hundreds of incandescent bulbs, had begun to replace the older painted signs a few years before. The Nevada State Journal of January 21,1924, blazoned forth, "Great White Way in Reno Shows Growth, Many New Electric Signs Are Installed in City."

September 30, 1905
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council of the

City of Reno

Dear Sirs:

We, the undersigned, Regents of the Nevada State University, in
compliance with a resolution duly passed at a meeting of said
Regents, held on the 30th day of September, 1905, hereby make
complaint to your Honorable Body that the so-called Oberon
Saloon and Gambling House, conducted by Wacker & Company, sit-
uated in the City of Reno, did, on or about the twenty-fifth
day of September, 1905, permit a minor to enter the said Saloon
and Gambling House and to loiter and gamble therein.

We request your Honorable body to take appropriate action on
this complaint.

So it looks like the same picture and there was a saloon which is the same from a reverse angle (undated picture) plus the complaint dated 1905.

My vote, plus the silver looking finish on the photo, low contrast, left hand slant (which means the person was writing on the back or a negative, right handed) I'd say it's real. vbg

I couldn't find L. Levitch anywhere.
