Re: July, 31, 1954, at Ebbets Field ....

How about 1938 at Ebbets Field... Holiday double header. Playing their arch enemies the NY Giants and Babe Ruth coaching for the Dodgers and putting on a show in batting practice. And guess what... to try to change the Dodgers pathetic image over the previous years, they changed Dodger blue to Green for only that one year. Most people don't know that Ruth coached for them and wore Green sox on his piano legs, but I was there. The color change didn't help in 1938, so it was back to royal blue in 1939, and with Leo the Lip at the helm they improved to finally get to the World Series in 1941. They had the Yankees on the ropes until Mickey Owen let Tommy Henrich's swinging strike three for the final out of the third game get past him, and to the grief of all the fans of Dem Bums, the Yankees, incredibly, went on to win the game and the Dodgers never recovered. Nor did the fans ever let Owen forget it. Just a recollection from an old Dog.
